Angie Stone
When I was in dental hygiene school I had to take community dental health. This was a class that went into the community and provided dental care to those in need. The final was to create a program, implement it, and measure how effective it was. All my classmates were doing sealant programs, fluoride programs, all treating children. Bless their heart I have 4 daughters so I get the importance of helping the oral needs of our kids, especially those who lack the care. But as I sat there, a thought came into my head. Who is helping the elders?!? Why isn't anyone going into nursing homes and helping them? Are they not important anymore? So I convinced my 2 partners to implement a training for CNAs at a local nursing home.
Fast forward to about 10 years later and many mouths cleaned in private practice I am anxiously sitting in a seminar called "Adopt A Nursing Home." Angie Stone presented to the small group about the lack of oral care in nursing homes, the growing demographics of the aging population, and the call for hygienists to fix the problem. I was so on fire, so excited about this new venture. She sparked my passion that I felt back in my college days but was too afraid to trudge my own path.
Through the years "Adopt A Nursing Home" turned into Hylife Oral Health Alliance. Angie found a way to get hygienists into nursing homes and provide weekly oral care. Yes, weekly brushing, flossing, dispensing xylitol products, and monitoring the oral health of elders. Why would hygienists need to do this? Can't the nursing staff do this?
Let's look at the statistics; 2 RN's each worked 40 hours per week, for two weeks totals 160 hours or 9600 minutes
Now divide 9600 minutes by 14 days for an average of 685.71 minutes per day.
Now divide the 685.71 minutes by the number of residents, say 100 residents in this example.
Gives us an average of 6.86 minutes per resident per day.
There are just not enough minutes for residents to get the oral care. Hygienists want to help, Hygeia Preventative Mobile Dentistry is here to help.
Thank-you Angie for sparking my life's passion, I am forever grateful and I love you!
